The Custodians of African Literature (COAL) accelerates access to education at the grassroots and supports youth-led social change through the creative arts. Since 2017, COAL has supported more than 600 children and over 5,000 young people, partnering with community-based organizations to expand access to learning opportunities and creative platforms in underserved communities.
Through their flagship programme, the Grassroots Accelerated Education Fund (GAEF), they invest directly in local educators and community-led initiatives helping out-of-school children and those at risk of being left behind return to learning. By strengthening the capacity of grassroots organizations, they work with communities to build sustainable solutions based on their own knowledge, strengths, and aspirations.
Alongside this, their youth development initiatives use storytelling, spoken word poetry, and other creative arts to support young people build confidence, communication, leadership and advocacy skills while amplifying their voices on issues affecting their lives and communities. From community education initiatives to youth-led creative programmes, COAL creates opportunities for children and young people to discover their potential, find their voice, and play an active role in shaping their futures and communities.
