Rebirth of a Queen
VP Grantee

Rebirth of a Queen, a first-year grantee of the New Africa Fund, is a survivor-led, community-based organization in Kenya that empowers survivors of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) and human trafficking through healing, mentorship, and education.
Founded in 2019 by Pauline Akinyi Juma, herself a survivor of sexual and domestic violence, the organization was established with the vision of creating a safe space for survivors and other vulnerable individuals in the community. Beyond offering immediate support, Rebirth of a Queen seeks to empower young people to become agents of change through storytelling, counseling, education, and vocational training.
At the heart of its work is a safe house and training center for survivors of SGBV and human trafficking. The center serves as an emergency, short-term, and long-term shelter, welcoming survivors from across the country, including trafficked refugees.
At the shelter, survivors receive psychological first aid and mentorship, along with fitness and wellness programming, and skills development in areas such as leather sewing, paper crafts, photography, and sandal making – helping them heal and build a path toward financial independence.
In addition to the safe house, Rebirth of a Queen runs two flagship programs:
-
Elimisha Project – providing formal and informal holistic education to vulnerable groups at the safe house and in communities.
-
Raising Authentic Voices – mentoring teenagers and young people, raising awareness on mental health and sexual reproductive health, and creating safe spaces for authentic self-expression and discussions on various topics.
